چکیده

• The first step in any physiological investigation is to define the problem. If this definition is ambiguous, the experimental results will most probably be inconclusive or may even prove irrelevant. To secure conclusive results, the investigator must select appropriate variables for measurement. Ideally, the terms comprising the definition of the problem should be sufficiently precise to enable him to identify these essential variables automatically. For example, if the problem centers around the work performed by the ventricular chamber, the variables to be measured are directly indicated by the physicists' definition of "work." On the other hand, a problem of cardiac function couched in terms of changes in "contractility" would be approached differently in different laboratories, according to the local interpretation of the term. Since "contractility" is variously employed to indicate "vigor" of contraction, rate of ejection, degree of ejection, rate of rise in ventricular pressure, or slope of a "function curve," what physical variables should be measured to determine whether this property has been altered under a specific experimental condition ? The significance of changes in the performance of the heart would be more clearly understood if they were described in precisely denned terms of the sort used by physical scientists and engineers. To this end, variations in the performance of the left ventricle in intact conscious dogs have been analyzed

Comparison of Cardiac Function in Young Patients with Thalassemia Intermedia and Healthy Individuals Using Echocardiography Method

Background: Cardiac dysfunction due to chronic anemia and hemosiderosis are the major causes of death among patients with thalassemia intermedia. This study was performed to compare the cardiac function in thalassemia intermedia patients with normal subjects by means of echocardiography. Materials and Methods: This was a case-control study performed on 22 patients affected by thalassemia int...

Effect of exercise training and L-arginine supplementation on oxidative stress and left ventricular function in rats with myocardial infarction

Introduction: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of exercise training and L-arginine supplementation on oxidative stress and systolic ventricular function in rats with myocardial infarction (MI). Methods: Four weeks after the surgically-induced MI, 40 male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to the following 4 groups (n=10): MI-sedentary control (Sed) MI-exercise (Ex) MI-...

Evaluation of Cardiac Function in Patients with Thalassemia Intermedia

Abstract Background Thalassemia intermedia is a variety of beta thalassemia which shows clinical symptoms somewhere between asymptomatic carriers and thalassemia major. Cardiac dysfunctions due to chronic anemia and hemosiderosis are the major causes of death in these patients. The purpose of this study is to evaluate cardiac function in these patients by echocardiography. Materials and Met...

Comparison of Fetal Echocardiography for Fetal Cardiac Structure in Women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Normal Pregnancies

BackgroundIncreased metabolic rate of hyperglycemia in gestational diabetes causes macrosomia, which can also affect the fetal heart. The thickness of the walls of the heart and its function in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) can change over time before treatment. We aimed to evaluate fetal cardiac structure in terms of ventricular wall thickness and its function in women w...

The Relation between Left Ventricular Function and Serum Ferritin in Major Β-Thalassemia

Abstract Objective Cardiac dysfunction is a major cause of death in patients with beta thalassemia. In these patients, repeated blood transfusion, ineffective erythropoiesis and increased gastrointestinal iron absorption lead to iron overload in the body and this induced heart failure. Left ventricular ejection fraction was measured in major beta thalassemia (β-Th) patients to detect the rela...
